Bright News Ahead for Beach Volleyball

One of the proposals approved to go to the Congress as part of the new future of FIVB beach volleyball is for the FIVB to promote only the World Championships and 10-12 major events each year

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 18, 2012 – The FIVB Board of Administration approved on Sunday key Rules of the Game Commission proposals which included aligning the rules of volleyball and beach volleyball closer together while a new concept of FIVB beach volleyball in the future was approved to go to the Congress with the following key points:

• The FIVB to reserve a week every month for developing Continental and National events.
• The FIVB to promote the World Championships and 10-12 major events.
• The FIVB to stimulate countries, outside Europe, to stage major events as well as other type of events such as Challenger, Satellite.
• The Open events requirements to be adapted to increase its number and redefine the overall FIVB events’ structure.

The FIVB Board also decided to support the inclusion of beach volleyball with 36 teams per gender in place of volleyball in the Youth Olympic Games Program for the first time in history. The YOG event will be staged in Nanjing, China, from August 16-28, 2014. The qualification process will start April 1, 2013 with the following criteria:
• 30 teams for the Continental Confederations (6 teams per Continental Confederation)
• 1 team Host Country
• 5 teams: universality places distributed by YOG tripartite commission (ANOC, IOC and ASOIF) in collaboration with the FIVB by March 2013.
• Country quota: 1 team per country
• To establish the age limit as under 19. Therefore, all athletes participating in the YOG must be 15, 16, 17 or 18 years old on December 31 in the year of the YOG.
• The Continental Confederations to implement events in accordance with the age limit in order to determine by June 8, 2014 the six teams per gender that will take part in the 2014 YOG.

In addition a draw was held for the Continental Cup Olympic Qualification tournament, which is due to be held in Tortoli, Italy from June 24 to July 1. If hosts Italy need to play (for example, have not already qualified for the Olympic Games or the Continental Cup Olympic Qualification tournament) they will be included in the Continental Cup Olympic Qualification tournament and a sixth vacancy will also be created in order to balance the pools (two pools of six). Out of the five Confederations, FIVB President Jizhong Wei drew South America, which means the fourth-placed team at the CSV Continental Cup will play in Tortoli if required.

The Board also received presentations from the organisers of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships to be held in Stare Jablonki, Poland in 2013 as well as from the Netherlands Volleyball Federation concerning their bid to host the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in 2015.
