Hyden, Scott bounce back for 7th title
Despite losing their first match in a domestic tournament all season, John Hyden and Sean Scott bounced back to win their seventh tournament this summer Sunday at the Wide Open tour's U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball in Cincinnati.
Hyden and Scott fell to Ty Loomis and Mark Williams in the third round (14-21, 21-18, 12-15), but took down the sixth-seeded pair in a rematch for the title in straight sets (21-17, 21-18). Hyden and Scott's first loss dropped them into the contender's bracket, where they defeated No. 9 Kevin McColloch and Matt Olson (21-16, 21-15), then took out top-seeded Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena (21-15, 18-21, 15-9) in the semifinals.
It was the first domestic event of the summer for Fuerbringer and Lucena, who had been playing on the international tour. They were handed the top seed, relegating Hyden and Scott to No. 2.
Hyden and Scott took part in two international events this summer, but lost in a country-quota match at the FIVB Shanghai Open and placed 17th in the FIVB Quebec Open. Overall, the duo was 4-3 internationally, but is now 29-1 in U.S. events this summer.
The $22,500 they split was the most Hyden and Scott have earned this season.
Second-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson won the women's event, defeating No. 4 Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik in the final (21-19, 21-17). Kropp and Pavlik took out top-seeded Jen Kessy and April Ross in the semifinals (21-19, 16-21, 15-12).
Cincinnati also marked the first domestic event of the year for Fendrick/Hanson and Kessy/Ross, who were playing on the World Tour.
The next U.S. event is this coming weekend in Miami for the National Volleyball League. Olympic gold medalistsKerri Walsh and Phil Dalhausser are expected to play; Walsh with Jess Gysin and Dalhausser with Lucena.
